Updated: November 2014×
So I don’t need a company to join?
No. We want to make it easier for people with great ideas to get out there straightforward and gain traction and investments at the very beginning of their path, without the burden of company formation and it’s costs.
Your idea is displayed in our showcase. If enough interest is shown, then the idea, together with it’s intellectual properties, are packaged into an equity wallet.
Why should a startup join Youstart.me?
By joining us, the startup receives exposure to potential investors, mentors and a crowd of fans, and a custom landing page for the project.
As a startup gains the very first requests traction an equity wallet is established for it, and an increasing number of investors will want to be part of the project. As investors buy equity, the value of the startup equity will increase in the natural way.
The startup will have access to a worldwide growing fan-base and a wide range of mentors with different background and experience.
Thanks to this accrued visibility, the value of the project will be maximised at all times.
At the final stage, owners of very hot startups will be able to partially “exit” by selling a portion of the wallet to large investment firms.
Do you guarantee any investments?
No. It is up to the public to decide if the startup is interesting enough to invest in. It will all depend on your ability to attract investors’ attention to your project. Nevertheless, to maximize your chances, you will be assisted and supported by mentors’ expertise, the immediate feedback received from your fans and our team’s know-how.
Once you are approved by the community and you have access to your startup’s wallet, the marketplace decides if the value of that wallet is going up or not.
When will I know that I qualify for funding?
During the first month from the date of your application you will be “liked”, or not and your fans and our mentors will assist you with comments and advices.
As soon as your project will reach the minimum rating required by our team to get to the next level, then your startup will go through an overnight process of initial evaluation.
How will I get funded by you?
We do not fund and we do not solicit any investment, unless we specifically decide to do so because we really like one particular project.
Our marketplace acts in a totally independent and transparent way. What we do is to coordinate the interactions between investors and entrepreneurs, with fans and mentors acting as supervisors.
When investors decide to invest in a startup, funds will be transferred to you directly through Stripe, a peer to peer platform, therefore no funding passes through our hands.
How much is it going to cost me to join Youstart.me?
During the 2015 we will be in BETA and therefore the monetary cost to anyone is zero, it’s all on us, except for the fees that Stripe will charge when transferring money between investors and startuppers. During this period we will reserve the opportunity to screen and restrictly select a TBD number of projects, being more focused on a small experience together.
Is there a minimum, or maximum percentage that I can sell?
There’s no minimum and there’s no obligation to sell. You can stay with our mentors as a completely privately held project, as long as you feel like it makes sense for you and as long as you do not need any external funding. This will certainly help you in raising even more for less, later on.
Who are the Mentors ?
Mentors are pre-qualified experts in various fields such as programming, business development, design, lean-startup, marketing, finance, etc.
Startups can/should provide feedback on the quality of the advice received, which contributes in ranking and qualifying mentors in due course.
Are there any incentives for Mentors?
Definitely. Apart from the glory and credibility that you will receive, you will also get preferential terms for buying portions of wallets that you like and support.
When units will be made available to the public, you will be the first have the chance to bid at the first available price.
Additional perks for mentors will be presented later after our Beta period and will include fees to be earned at our demo days, options made available at future round of financing, etc.
How can I become a Mentor?
Simply register, fill-in your profile, and select a startup to work with. We’ll look at your profile and get back to you as quick as possible.
What does the wallet consist of?
The wallet is a distributed and decentralized encrypted digital portfolio that is continuously synchronized, through a peer to peer system, as transactions and price updates take place.
This makes it impossible for anyone to steal, or lose any of the fractions individually owned.
The wallet consists in 10,000 units, each representing 0.01% of the project, therefore during your initial seed stage, nobody will have to worry for dilution, hidden agendas, side deals, or other complications that could distract both the investors and the entrepreneur from their respective goals.
How safe is the Wallet?
The wallet is based on a flavored DHT (distributed hash table), which makes it extremely safe.
The data is not stored on a single server which could be vulnerable. Instead, it is updated and synchronized continuously in a distributed form.
Is the mechanism similar to the one of a cryptocurrency, such as the bitcoin?
No it’s different. Our protocol is a DHT based space partition secured with a unique process of replication in the cloud. Each node of our p2p system has an identical replica of the whole data, to guarantee a perfect distribution.
Do I need to download the Wallet software?
The inventor needs to download and install it, and enjoy numerous features.
As an investor you can if you want to, but you don’t have to. Anyway, you have full access online from a desktop, or a mobile device.
It’s highly recommended that an investor downloads a wallet if he intends to invest in several projects, simultaneously. This will allow him/her to gather all necessary information about other investors, changes in the project ownership, etc.
What is the Circle Marker and how can I benefit from that?
We deployed the Circle Marker as a binary tree technology to facilitate search and interaction among players in our marketplace. It’s a live feature, constantly keeping track of interests and skills of all mentors, investors and other participants. Thanks to that, we will feature a lot of realtime stats.
What are the benefits of investing in a startup through Youstart.me?
By investing in one, or more startups, investors can keep track of their investments on a real time basis, which is currently totally impossible, unless you are one of the founders of an accelerator, or a leader of a syndicate.
This also means having the chance to invest more, or sell quicker, if and when this will be a need and again, up until now, investors are generally stuck with their investments, either getting unfairly diluted if the project goes well, or with no chance to sell before it’s too late, if the project isn’t performing as anticipated.
Thanks to the additional liquidity and transparency available through Youstart.me, your investment in our tradeable units, can be resold at a profit, or liquidated with a minimal loss.
An investor can also be a Mentor, adding know-how to funding, thus improving the chances to create value for himself and for other investors.
How do I invest in a startup?
By simply buying units of the equity-wallet, when it will be made available.
Payment is quick & secure and will take place peer-to-peer, via Stripe, therefore money will go directly from you to the startup, which means that we do not collect any money from investors, we just act as coordinators.
What do I get when I invest in a company?
You don’t get any paper certificate. Instead, your online wallet is credited with the corresponding amount of the startup’s tradable units.
Do I need to download the Wallet?
You can but you don’t have to. We have designed it to be easy to access online even from mobile devices. If you will invest in more than one startup, the wallet will help you to keep a precise track of all your investments.
Can I invest with bitcoins?
Yes. We will soon roll-out the possibility to pay with bitcoins, but our base currency is the US dollar.
How does the secondary market for units work?
If you wish to buy, or sell units of a given startup, you insert your quantity, price and time limit in our trading platform available through the wallet application. Anyone willing to match your intention will automatically initiate the transaction, which will take place on automatic. Stripe will move the cash from a user to the other and we will move units the other way around in the respective wallets.
If buying during an initial offer of units, you can enter your amount and price indication and we will assist the startup in allocating what’s available to the best bids at that given moment.
At this point in time only, Mentors will have the right to bid ahead of Investors, on a first come first served basis. This is why it’s normally more advantageous to be both a potential investor and a Mentor.
